Foodie Museums and Edible Artefacts - Part 2

Czech Cukrarnas

Prague-On-Segway is still recovering from the meat something with something dumplings and something sauce it had for lunch (we think it was today, but we’ve been stumbling around Prague ever since trying to digest, it could be weeks later for all we know). Lunch on segway? Why not?
Having courageously battled-off the dark forces of the food-coma, we mount our podiums and roll off into the city to find our next source of taste stimulation.

“If food is a religion, then our temples are the Czech Cukrarnas”

The art studios of the Czech food industry

After a lengthy spin around the town, Prague-On-Segway likes nothing more than parking it’s two wheels and kicking back in the sun with a snack. If food is a religion (which for Prague-On-Segway, it most certainly is), then our temples are the Czech Cukrarnas. No holy garments are required to enter these places of culinary worship however- just a little bit of change and an appetite for sweet and savoury delights.

Google will tell you this word translates as ‘sweet-shop’- but these places are no nests for candy-craving children. These are the art studios of the Czech food industry, and each and every piece is edible and available at a non-collecter’s price.

Unfortunately, the traditional Cukrarnas are often remarkably unflattering to look at from the outside. Whilst there are exceptions in some of the famous, fancier old town establishments, generally the Cukrarnas are adorned with garish colour combinations, outdated typeface, and non-existent window displays. They radiate the ambience of a down-market 80’s travel agency, that still sells all-inclusive packages to the Costa del Sol. It wouldn’t look to the untrained eye, like business was booming.

But if you can prize yourself away from the unremarkable exterior and the uninspiring interior design, the glass display cabinets are a beautiful sight to behold. It’s a bit like looking at the crown jewels through the window of a burnt-out Trabant.

The more 80’s it looks, the better it tastes

As a rule when choosing which treat to pick- Prague-On-Segway subscribes to the notion that’ the more 80’s it looks, the better it tastes’. Think elaborately layered trifle-like cakes garnished with your favourite fruit cuts. If you can picture a leather jacket-clad David Hasselhoff enjoying it whilst leaning on the back of his truck, you’ve probably picked a winner. Which reminds us, it’s Baywatch hour, so if you’ll excuse us and our party-size box, we’ll be making our way to a television to sample our selection of sweets and enjoy the show.

Oh, and to ensure you don’t miss out Prague-On-Segway’s taken some sneaky pictures to ensure you know how to find these delightful little food portals during your visit. Enjoy!
